Stay in Step Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center

Category: Health & Wellness

Gabriela Carmargo’s work with the Stay in Step Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center was inspired by a personal journey with her husband, Romulo Camargo. While serving in Afghanistan, as a Special Forces Chief Warrant Officer Three, his team was ambushed during a firefight. Tragically, Romulo sustained a gunshot wound to the back of his neck, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down.

For years, the family sought better rehabilitation options beyond the veteran’s affairs system, only to discover a significant gap in available resources. This need was evident within the military community and even more pronounced in the civilian sector. On June 20, 2015, Camargo opened the Stay in Step Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center, the only long-term physical rehabilitation center in the Tampa Bay area, serving both military personnel and civilians.
