The United Soccer League announced plans to launch a Division One men’s professional league in the 2027-28 season, marking a significant expansion of the U.S. soccer landscape.
The new league will represent the highest level of professional soccer within the USL structure, complementing its existing leagues: the USL Championship (Division II) and USL League One (Division III). The move aims to provide additional opportunities for players, clubs and communities, while aligning with global soccer standards.
“This is a defining moment for the USL and the future of soccer in the United States,” said USL Chief Executive Officer Alec Papadakis. “By bringing Division One soccer to more cities, we’re expanding access to top-tier competition and strengthening the sport’s foundation nationwide.”
The U.S. Soccer Federation designates Division One as the highest level of professional play in the country. The new league is expected to elevate competition and talent development, further integrating the USL’s player pathway.
The announcement comes amid growing momentum for soccer in the U.S., with rising participation rates and anticipation for international events such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, according to a statement.
Founded in 1986, and based in Tampa, the USL operates men’s and women’s leagues at multiple levels including the recently launched USL Super League, a Division One women’s competition. The organization has national and international media rights deals with CBS Sports, ESPN and Peacock.
