A Tampa-based health technology company is introducing what it says is the first handheld thermometer that connects directly to cellular networks, eliminating the need for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, hubs or smartphone pairing.
Smart Meter announced the launch of iDigiTemp, a fully cellular-enabled thermometer designed for remote patient monitoring.
The device captures temperature readings and transmits them in real time over Smart Meter’s private data network.
The company says the product simplifies how providers monitor patients at home, especially those without reliable internet access.
Designed for remote patient monitoring
Unlike traditional digital thermometers, iDigiTemp does not rely on a phone app or local internet connection.
The device transmits data automatically over cellular networks using a built-in multi-carrier SIM.
According to Smart Meter, readings are sent instantly to care teams through the company’s secure remote patient monitoring platform.
“This marks a defining moment for Remote Patient Monitoring,” said Casey Pittock, CEO of Smart Meter. “Connectivity and reliability are critical as RPM moves into mainstream healthcare. Our private data network ensures every reading is transmitted securely and in real time, without depending on patient Wi-Fi or smartphone access.”
Temperature monitoring is often used to detect early signs of infection or complications during chronic care management and post-acute recovery.
How iDigiTemp works
The handheld device delivers a temperature reading in one second with a single button press. It can be used for both forehead and ear measurements and is designed for patients aged 1 and older.
Smart Meter said the device is ready to use out of the box. No setup, pairing or additional equipment is required.
Key features include:
- One-touch temperature readings
- Forehead and ear measurement options
- Built-in cellular connectivity
- Automatic transmission of data to providers
- Lightweight handheld design for home use
The company said the device automatically connects to the strongest available cellular network to maintain consistent performance.
Part of a broader connected care platform
iDigiTemp joins Smart Meter’s existing lineup of cellular-connected medical devices, including blood pressure monitors, glucose meters, pulse oximeters and weight scales.
Smart Meter said its technology is currently used by more than 300,000 patients across the U.S.

The Tampa-based company operates its own private data network designed specifically for healthcare monitoring, allowing providers to receive patient data without relying on consumer internet connections.
New reimbursement environment increases demand
The launch comes as new Remote Patient Monitoring CPT codes are finalized for 2026.
According to Smart Meter, the updated codes reduce the number of required reading days and lower the clinical time thresholds needed for reimbursement, making RPM programs more accessible for providers.
As temperature monitoring becomes more integrated into remote care, Smart Meter said iDigiTemp positions providers to expand RPM services while meeting reimbursement requirements.
Why it matters for Tampa Bay
Smart Meter is part of a growing group of Tampa Bay health technology companies building national platforms from the region.
As healthcare systems increasingly rely on remote monitoring, cellular-enabled tools offer an alternative for patients who lack consistent internet access, including seniors and rural populations.
For Tampa Bay’s healthcare and technology ecosystem, the launch highlights how local companies are developing infrastructure that supports broader shifts in care delivery.
Preorders for iDigiTemp are now open. Customer shipments are expected to begin in January.
