In Memoriam: Rev. Morris E. Hintzman, visionary leader and compassionate community advocate

Jo-Lynn Brown September 23, 2024

On September 1, Metropolitan Ministries announced the passing of Rev. Morris E. Hintzman, a leader, advocate and friend who dedicated his life to serving others and uplifting those in need. At 82 years old, he leaves behind a profound legacy of compassion and visionary leadership. He was the Chief Executive Officer of Metropolitan Ministries for over four decades.

Born on November 25, 1941, in Menomonie, Wisconsin, Hintzman dedicated his life to serving God, his community and uplifting those in need. Under his guidance, Metropolitan Ministries achieved numerous milestones, including:

  • Over 47 million meals served to the hungry and homeless.
  • 2.8 million nights of safe shelter provided.
  • Holiday assistance that supported half a million families living in poverty through the “Holiday Tent.”
  • 2.2 million volunteer hours logged, reflecting the community spirit he inspired.
  • More than 3 million children’s lives impacted, changing the trajectory of their futures forever.

“Morris was a friend, mentor, pastor, a visionary leader, a doer of the Word and a relentless advocate for the poor and homeless,” said Tim Marks, current President and CEO of Metropolitan Ministries. “It’s been my highest honor to be a small part of his legacy and witness the ripple effects of one man’s compassion and vision. He touched our community like no other, and we sorely miss him.”

His dedication to service earned him numerous awards and recognition including the Tampa Bay Business Journal’s Nonprofit CEO of the Year Award, the Tampa Bay Lightning Community Hero Award and the Ethics Award from the Center for Ethics at The University of Tampa, among others.

A memorial service was held Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Bay Hope Church, Lakeshore Campus, located at 17030 Lakeshore Road, Lutz. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Morris E. Hintzman Senior Care Fund through Metropolitan Ministries.
