A New Era for the Arts: A preview of The Gala for the Straz Center

The Straz Center has long been a beacon for the performing arts in Tampa Bay, hosting two major fundraising events every year, at least that’s what it has always done in the past.

Each gala had its own theme and mission but, this year, the Straz is debuting a reimagined “production.”

For the first time ever, the Broadway Ball and the Opera Tampa Grand Gala will merge into one, star-studded affair, aptly named the Gala for the Straz Center. What began as a logistical necessity in the wake of hurricanes Helene and Milton, has evolved into a groundbreaking celebration of art, culture and community.

“There is so much excitement surrounding merging these two events into one spectacular night, the fusion is unmatched,” says Keebler J. Straz, president of the David A. Straz, Jr. Foundation, and previously the chair of the Broadway Ball. “This new approach allows us to bring together the elegance, and passion, of opera with the high-energy allure of Broadway, creating an unforgettable evening that celebrates the best of the performing arts.”

The excitement is shared by Troy and Anne Atlas, a married couple that was co-chairing the Opera Gala. “We’re tremendously excited about the Gala for the Straz Center,” they said in a joint statement. “This gala provides patrons with the unique opportunity to support all Straz programs—including Opera Tampa, dance, arts education and new theatrical works.”

Keebler Straz, as well as Troy and Anne Atlas are now all co-chairing the newly created Gala for the Straz Center.

Unique Celebration of the Arts

This combined gala offers an opportunity for attendees to explore the connections between opera and Broadway, two art forms with more in common than expected.

“When you think about it, in a lot of ways, musical Broadway shows are the modern version of opera,” Troy Atlas explains. “Operas consist of stories that are acted and sung by performers on stage along with an orchestra—add in microphones, amplifiers and the English language that audiences can understand, and you get a show like Les Misérables, Wicked or The Lion King.”

Greg Holland, president and chief executive officer of the Straz Center, shares the excitement. “Our excitement springs from the opportunity we now have to create a brand-new event anchored in stellar performances from opera, Broadway and dance,” he says. “There is no other gala like this in North America. Gala for the Straz Center immerses attendees in an unmatched evening of food, wine and performance.”

A Must-Attend Event

This year’s gala promises to be a can’t-miss evening. Guests will enjoy world-class dining, breathtaking performances and an array of exciting auction items. The Atlases know, firsthand, how special these auctions can be: “At last year’s Opera Gala, we won the auction for a trip to visit the Berlin opera, as well as the city’s Christmas markets,” Anne shares. “It was a wonderful trip and we’re working on offering similar opportunities at this year’s gala.”

Straz emphasizes the broader significance of the event. “This is the perfect chance to align with a cause that elevates our community and cultivates creativity,” she says. “Don’t miss your chance to be part of a truly unforgettable evening that blends culture, community and connection.”
