James Museum partners with catering company for bistro reopening

The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art will reopen its in-house bistro, The Canyon, in spring 2025, as The Canyon by Catering by The Family.

The restaurant, in downtown St. Petersburg, will offer a new menu featuring lunch options, casual bites, specialty coffees and craft cocktails. The redesigned space will provide table, bar and lounge seating.

In a new partnership, the museum has joined with Tampa Bay-based Catering by The Family, which will also serve as the museum’s primary caterer for events. “We’re creating more than just a café — we’re establishing a community space where art, culture and food intersect,” said Robin Nicholson, executive director of The James Museum.

Steven Gonzalez Sr., owner of Catering by The Family, said the collaboration aims to offer guests a more personal dining experience. “We look forward to engaging guests through our culinary approach,” Gonzalez said.

Executive Chef Zakari Davila, a Tampa native and Food Network “Chopped” champion, will lead the kitchen. Davila said the new menu draws on flavors of the American West and indigenous recipes, with a focus on locally sourced ingredients. “This is a rare opportunity to connect food with art,” he said.

A preview event, part of The James Museum Event Showcase: Let’s Glow, is scheduled for March 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. The public event will offer a first look at the new menu with food tastings, access to the museum galleries and opportunities to meet the team.
