The Studio Public House is a distinctly British experience in St. Petersburg (PHOTOS)

Barbara Lynch March 5, 2025

A truly memorable brunch transcends mere sustenance. It’s the confluence of exceptional cuisine, an inviting ambiance and impeccable service that fosters a sense of belonging. Add the effervescence of flowing mimosas and the smooth cadence of live jazz, and it becomes a cherished ritual. In the heart of St. Petersburg’s vibrant Grand Central District, The Studio Public House offers just that—a refined reimagining of the classic brunch.

This neighborhood gem, imbued with authentic English charm, elevates standard fare with robust British classics like bangers and mash, served on a patio as guests enjoy the perfect Florida day. With champagne flowing and jazz melodies floating through the air, the menu and atmosphere creates an experience that is both familiar and compelling. The attentive staff ensures every guest feels welcome.

The Studio Public House is the realization of Owner and Chef Mike Crippin’s vision, cultivated during more than two decades as a chef at The Moon Under Water. Transforming the former Pom Pom’s space, Crippin and his wife, Ali, persevered through formidable challenges including a planned opening that coincided with the onset of the 2020 pandemic. Undeterred, they opened their doors in October of that year, establishing a neighborhood British pub with a playful ethos: “Pets Preferred – People Accepted.”

This philosophy extends to canine companions, who are treated to bespoke fish-and-chip-flavored treats, even earning a mention in Jack Kenner’s book “Dogs I’ve Nosed from Here to Naples.” Now celebrating its fifth anniversary, The Studio Public House has become a beloved fixture in the Grand Central District.

The name itself speaks to the establishment’s layered history. “The Studio” pays homage to the building’s past as a recording studio for local musicians, while “Public House” evokes traditional British pub culture. This musical connection resonates within the menu, where dishes are playfully named after iconic recording artists. From “Elton’s Big Sausage Melt,” featuring cheddar and Irish bangers on sourdough bread, to “Sinatra’s Pastrami,” these whimsical names add personality to the bites.

The menu showcases elevated comfort food with a British flair. Start with the Tikha Dip with Sexy Naan—a tantalizing blend of warming Indian spices served with perfectly charred, pillowy naan. All soups and curries are crafted in-house. Crippin’s passion for pork shines through, particularly in the house-cured bacon, prepared according to traditional English methods. The Bollywood Chicken Salad is another standout—tender curry-spiced chicken complemented by crisp apple slices, tangy pickled onions and toasted almonds, creating a symphony of textures and flavors.

Beyond its renowned fish and chips, served with premium steak fries and flavorful curries, The Studio Public House stands out for its inclusive menu. Catering to diverse palates, it features vegan options and handcrafted Churned Ice Cream, with both vegan and dog-friendly varieties available.

The ambiance elevates the experience even further. Picture sipping a Sunday mimosa as James Suggs and Trio’s jazz tunes create the perfect backdrop. The inviting outdoor patio captures the neighborhood’s charm, making The Studio Public House an ideal spot for a leisurely, weekend brunch.

Sometimes, the best brunch spots aren’t found in bustling downtown areas or along tourist-laden streets. They’re tucked into vibrant neighborhoods, like The Studio Public House, where a blend of authenticity, creativity and community spirit transforms a meal into an unforgettable experience.
