Metropolitan Ministries names next CEO

Local community leader to step into the role as Tim Marks prepares for retirement.

Metropolitan Ministries has named Dr. Sarah Combs as its next chief executive officer in a historic leadership transition. She becomes just the third person to lead the organization in its 53-year history.

Combs brings nearly two decades of nonprofit experience to the role, most recently as CEO of the University Area Community Development Corporation. She will officially begin her tenure at Metropolitan Ministries on August 11, succeeding longtime leader Tim Marks, who is set to retire at the end of 2025, after 20 years of service.

The announcement follows a six-month, nationwide search led by the nonprofit’s board of directors, which unanimously selected Combs. She will oversee a team of more than 400 employees and 20,000 volunteers, across multiple campuses, guiding the organization through a new phase of growth.

Her goals include expanding services in Pinellas and Pasco counties, enhancing programs in Hillsborough County and ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of the ministry.

“I’m honored to follow in Tim Marks’s footsteps and build on an extraordinary legacy of service and compassion,” Combs said in a statement.

To support a smooth transition, Marks will remain on staff as chief strategy advisor through the end of the year, offering mentorship and guidance to Combs and the board.

“I could not be prouder of Sarah,” said Marks. “She is one of the most visionary and well-rounded leaders I’ve had the privilege to work with. Her deep roots in this community, combined with her innovative approach, make her the ideal leader to guide Metropolitan Ministries into its next chapter. She will be a dedicated steward of the community’s trust and support.”

Metropolitan Ministries provides food, shelter, education and other services to thousands of vulnerable individuals and families throughout the Tampa Bay region each year.

Combs was named Tampa Bay Business and Wealth’s 2024 Overall winner in its Women Who Win Awards, an awards program, created to recognize distinguished women leaders whose dedication to their industries and communities deserves recognition.
