New College of Florida receives $2.5 million to create education center

New College of Florida has received a $2.5 million gift from the DSF Charitable Foundation to create a new Contemplation and Education Center, on its Sarasota Bay campus.

The DSF Charitable Foundation, led by Florida residents David and Sara Scaife, has long been committed to advancing health, human services and education. Their latest contribution to New College will fund the design, construction and preservation of a space that aims to foster reflection, academic inquiry and civic engagement, according to a statement.

Plans for the Contemplation and Education Center include hosting interfaith ceremonies, academic lectures, meditations, Socratic dialogues and public events, such as weddings and memorials. It is also expected to serve as a revenue-generating venue.

The project is pending approval by the New College Board of Trustees.
