Things to Do: Free film screenings explore Hurricane Ian’s impact on Florida

Jo-Lynn Brown August 6, 2025

Nearly three years after Hurricane Ian tore through Southwest Florida, a new documentary is bringing survivors’ stories, and hard-earned lessons, to screens across Tampa Bay.

Rising: Surviving the Surge, produced by WGCU Public Media, chronicles the impact of the 2022 storm through gripping footage and personal accounts from residents, first responders and experts. From flooded homes to community-wide recovery efforts, the film explores how one storm reshaped a region, and what it means for Florida’s future as hurricanes grow stronger and more frequent.

Florida Humanities is hosting a series of free screenings and panel discussions about the documentary.

Upcoming screening dates:

August 14: USF St. Petersburg campus

September 24: The Portico Cafe, Tampa

October 22: Eckerd College, St. Petersburg

November: Sarasota-area events to be announced

Funding support for this series is provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Florida Humanities, the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay and the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.
