Defense contractor moving HQ to Tampa and invest $20M in region

Defense contractor Orion Edge moves its headquarters to Tampa, adding $20 million in investment and 20 new jobs.

Colorado-based defense contractor Orion Edge is moving its corporate headquarters to Tampa, bringing 20 high-wage jobs and $20 million in new investment to Hillsborough County.

The company develops tactical electronic warfare systems that help U.S. forces disrupt enemy communications and drone navigation networks across air, land and sea.

The decision deepens Tampa’s growing connection to national security and advanced technology industries. CEO John Mueller said the region’s proximity to U.S. Special Operations Command, along with a strong business climate, made the city the right fit for long-term growth.

“We chose Tampa because of its proximity to our government customers at the United States Special Operations Command and the favorable business environment that is actively fostered by both the Tampa Bay area and the State of Florida,” Mueller said.

What happened

Orion Edge first visited Tampa in May during the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference and quickly identified opportunities to strengthen its relationships with defense partners.

Soon after, the company began collaborating with the City of Tampa and the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council (EDC) to explore relocation options.

The EDC supported the move through introductions to investors, workforce programs and assistance with Quick Response Training grants.

“We’re proud to welcome Orion Edge to Tampa,” said Craig J. Richard, President and CEO of the Tampa Bay EDC. “Orion Edge’s innovative defense technology and advanced warfighter solutions will play a crucial role in strengthening our region’s defense and security ecosystem.”

Joanne LaBlanc of Colliers represented Orion Edge in the real estate transaction.

Why it matters

The relocation brings high-skill, high-wage defense technology jobs to Hillsborough County and builds on the region’s growing strength in aerospace, defense and national security.

With MacDill Air Force Base and SOCOM nearby, Tampa continues to position itself as a strategic hub for government and private-sector innovation.

Takeaway

Orion Edge’s move underscores Tampa’s evolution into a hub for defense technology, attracting both innovation and investment. The company’s $20 million commitment reinforces confidence in the region’s workforce and economic infrastructure.
