Defense contractor moving HQ to Tampa and invest $20M in region

Defense contractor Orion Edge is moving its headquarters to Tampa, investing $20M and adding 20 high-wage jobs.

Colorado-based defense contractor Orion Edge is relocating its corporate headquarters to Tampa, bringing $20 million in new investment and 20 high-wage jobs to Hillsborough County.

The company develops tactical electronic warfare systems that help U.S. forces disrupt enemy communications and drone navigation across air, land and sea.

CEO John Mueller said Tampa’s proximity to U.S. Special Operations Command, along with the region’s business climate, made the city the right fit for long-term growth.

What happened

Orion Edge began evaluating Tampa after visiting the region in May during the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference.

Soon after, the company worked with the City of Tampa and the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council to explore relocation options.

The Tampa Bay EDC supported the move through investor introductions, workforce programs and assistance with Quick Response Training grants.

“We chose Tampa because of its proximity to our government customers at the United States Special Operations Command and the favorable business environment,” Mueller said.

Joanne LaBlanc of Colliers represented Orion Edge in the real estate transaction.

Why it matters

The relocation brings high-skill defense technology jobs to Hillsborough County and strengthens Tampa’s growing national security ecosystem.

With MacDill Air Force Base and SOCOM nearby, the region continues to attract companies working in aerospace, defense and advanced manufacturing.

Industry leaders say proximity to federal partners and a competitive cost structure are making Tampa an increasingly attractive alternative to traditional defense hubs.

Part of a broader relocation trend

Orion Edge’s announcement came amid rising corporate migration to Tampa as companies move out of higher-tax states.

Recent reporting shows Tampa is one of several Sun Belt markets gaining momentum as firms seek affordability, talent access and long-term growth.

On the same day, restaurant brand Wagamama also announced plans to relocate its U.S. headquarters to Tampa.

Together, the moves highlight Tampa’s growing appeal across multiple industries.

Takeaway

Orion Edge’s decision reinforces Tampa’s emergence as a hub for defense technology and mission-driven innovation.

The company’s $20 million investment signals confidence in the region’s workforce, infrastructure and strategic location.

As relocation activity continues, Tampa’s role in national business and security networks is expanding.
