Watermelon Swim is marking National Water Safety Month, this May, with a series of events and partnerships aimed at educating families about drowning prevention and swimming safety.
The Tampa Bay-based swim school, with the Glazer Children’s Museum and NFL player Shaq Barrett, promoted lifesaving water safety practices at a May 6 event at the museum.
“Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4,” Seal says. “Formal, continuous swim lessons reduce the risk by 88%.”
Throughout the month, Watermelon Swim will offer in-lesson education on real-life emergencies and partner with schools and community centers to expand access to water safety instruction. The organization provides more than $350,000 annually in swim lesson scholarships and teaches over 3,000 students free water safety education in underserved communities.
Watermelon Swim currently serves more than 7,000 weekly students, across five locations in Tampa Bay, with new sites planned for Zephyrhills and Brandon, in 2026.
