A new permanent exhibit honoring one of Tampa Bay’s most beloved residents has opened at Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
“Tales of Winter the Dolphin” offers an immersive experience celebrating the life and legacy of Winter, the rescued bottlenose dolphin who became a global symbol of hope and resilience after losing her tail and learning to swim with the help of a prosthetic.
Located on the fourth floor of the aquarium’s Visitor’s Center, the exhibit traces Winter’s journey from her rescue in 2005, to her rise as the star of the Dolphin Tale films. Guests can view realistic prosthetic tail models, props from the movies, including an animatronic dolphin and Sawyer’s wetsuit, as well as a life-sized replica of the crab trap that caused Winter’s injury. There are also personal keepsakes on display, such as a special dolphin “driver’s license” issued to Winter on her 16th birthday and her favorite rubber duck toy.
“Winter’s journey captivated hearts across the globe and helped define who we are as an organization,” said Joe Handy, chief executive officer of Clearwater Marine Aquarium. “She wasn’t just a dolphin; she was a symbol of hope.”
Winter’s impact continues through CMA’s Inspire Program, which supports individuals facing illness, injury or adversity.
Outside the exhibit, visitors can also spend a quiet moment in Winter’s memorial garden, a space honoring the dolphin.
