Nasdaq-listed defense contractor Leonardo DRS will produce electronics for the U.S. Navy’s primary shipborne missile-launching system at its Largo facility as part of $96 million in new contract awards.
The work covers the MK 41 Vertical Launching System, which operates aboard U.S. Navy destroyers and ships used by 14 allied navies. Leonardo DRS will build programmable power supplies, launch control units and transformer platform systems that help operate the launcher.
The company will split production between its Naval Electronics facilities in Largo and Johnstown, Pennsylvania. It did not disclose how much of the $96 million is tied specifically to the Tampa Bay operation.
The Navy issued the awards July 22 and 23 as option modifications to existing multiyear contracts. Leonardo DRS announced them Sept. 10 after more than 15 years of supplying electronics for the MK 41 program.
“Leonardo DRS Naval Electronics is proud to continue providing the U.S. Navy and allied partners with critical MK 41 vertical launch system electronics hardware, supporting the program for over 15 years,” said Cari Ossenfort, senior vice president and general manager of the company’s Naval Electronics business.
