Andy’s Frozen Custard is planning a new restaurant at the northwest corner of South Dale Mabry Highway and West El Prado Boulevard in South Tampa, according to plans filed with the city as part of a rezoning application.
The Springfield, Missouri-based chain has picked 3423 S. Dale Mabry Highway, now home to the 3,926-square-foot BJ’s Alabama Barbeque, for a new 1,611-square-foot restaurant with an outdoor patio. The Andy’s will have no indoor seating, instead serving customers through a walk-up area and one-way drive-thru.
Plans show a low-slung, dark-brick restaurant with large storefront windows, covered outdoor space, illuminated Andy’s signs and a freestanding sign topped by the chain’s oversized frozen-custard cone.
The South Tampa restaurant would give Andy’s its first location in Tampa proper, joining existing Tampa Bay shops in Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Lutz, Odessa, Plant City, Wimauma and Valrico. Founded in Missouri in 1986, Andy’s has grown to more than 180 locations across 15 states, largely through the same freestanding drive-thru and walk-up format planned for Dale Mabry.
Property owner New Pagoda LLC is seeking city approval to rezone the site for the restaurant, which will replace BJ’s and incorporate several neighboring parcels. No opening date is listed.
