St. Pete launches ‘Safe Summer’ Fridays to engage teens

Megan Kostner June 11, 2024

The city of St. Petersburg has launched its “Safe Summer” series of events beginning with a block party Saturday, at Campbell Park Recreation Center, complete with education on violence prevention, snacks and family-friendly activities.

The event officially kicked off the “Safe Summer” series, which will continue with “Safe Summer Fridays” held every other Friday, from June 14 through August 9, from 6:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m., at Lake Vista Recreation Center located at 1401 62nd Ave. South.

“A ‘Safe Summer’ is defined as one where residents in the community take the initiative to be active in neighborhood projects and programs,” said Lisa Wheeler-Bowman, the city’s new Community Impact and Safety Liaison. “St. Pete residents are encouraged to be vigilant and to take care of the people that live around them. ‘See something, say something’ is the main focus of this summer programming.”

The Friday events are for kids ages 12-16 and will provide a safe space for them to enjoy an open gym, movie night and refreshments. Parents and guardians are required to sign waivers for the teens’ participation.
