TPA plans $25M check-in expansion to ease demand

Airport plans $25M check-in expansion to handle growing passenger demand.
Chuck Merlis April 6, 2026

Tampa International Airport is advancing a $25.4 million contract to expand and reconfigure its ticketing level.

The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority is set to consider a design-build contract with Austin Commercial for the first phase of the project at its April 2 meeting.

The work stems from the airport’s 2022 master plan update, which identified operational constraints tied to rising passenger volume.

Plans call for a 14,000-square-foot expansion adding 28 ticket counters, relocating airline offices into a new 30,000-square-foot space and reworking the existing 135,000-square-foot ticketing area to improve passenger flow. The project supports a capacity of up to 38 million annual passengers.

The design contract would begin April 2 and run for one year, advancing the project toward construction.

In a separate item, the board will consider awarding a $12.5 million contract to Burgess Civil to clear approximately 155 acres for wildlife hazard mitigation and expand an employee parking lot by 832 spaces.

The project includes drainage, paving and lighting improvements to support expanded staffing.

The agenda also includes a $4.8 million contract to replace the airport’s aging paging system, which has reached the end of its service life, and a five-year, $70.8 million consulting contract with RS&H to support design and engineering work across Tampa International and its general aviation airports.
