Gen X Tavern, the downtown Tampa restaurant and bar known for its 1980s and 1990s nostalgia theme, will close July 4 as ownership prepares to introduce a new concept at the same location.
The company announced the closure Wednesday in a social media post marking the end of its seven-year run in downtown Tampa. Ownership said the space will reopen under a new restaurant-and-bar concept that it described as more elevated and built for a “new era,” although additional details have not been released.
Gen X Tavern opened near Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, Amalie Arena and the Tampa Riverwalk, carving out a niche as a retro-themed restaurant and nightlife destination centered on 1980s and 1990s music, décor and pop culture references.

The venue marketed itself as “Modern Fare with Retro Flair,” blending casual dining with DJs, themed nights and a late-night atmosphere that became part of Tampa’s downtown entertainment scene.
Its closure comes as downtown Tampa’s hospitality market continues changing alongside a growing residential base, heavier tourism traffic and shifting nightlife trends. Across the urban core, restaurant operators have increasingly moved toward more upscale dining, cocktail-driven concepts and experience-focused venues aimed at both residents and visitors.
In its announcement, Gen X Tavern thanked customers for supporting the business through birthdays, anniversaries and nights out over the past seven years.
“This place wasn’t just a restaurant — it was a time machine,” the company wrote in the post.
The business encouraged customers to visit during its final weeks before the July 4 closure.
