Tampa General Hospital is planning a $5.7 million expansion of its Radiation Oncology Department on Davis Islands, adding space for a new linear accelerator and renovating existing space for a CT simulator at its Cancer Institute.
The project would add 2,708 square feet at 3 Tampa General Circle, with part of the addition housing the linear accelerator, its control room, structural support and radiation shielding. Tampa General also would build a new staff workroom, then convert the space employees leave behind into a CT simulator suite with a control room, patient waiting area and restroom.
Construction would be phased so the Radiation Oncology Department can remain in operation, with patient access and surrounding occupied areas maintained throughout the work. The project has a total permit value of $5.74 million and remains under review by the City of Tampa.
The expansion follows several years of investment in radiation oncology across TGH. In 2023, the hospital said its Cancer Institute offered TrueBeam linear accelerator technology, CyberKnife, high-dose-rate brachytherapy and radiopharmaceutical treatments. At the time, TGH also planned another TrueBeam system at its Brandon Healthplex and a new CyberKnife system on its main Tampa campus.
The permit does not say whether the new linear accelerator would replace an existing machine or add another one, so it is unclear whether the project would increase the Cancer Institute’s radiation-treatment capacity.
