Seventy-five new affordable apartments are planned for a 1.35-acre property near 34th Street North in St. Petersburg, where a $7.4 million funding award will also help renovate a neighboring 34-unit apartment complex.
The St. Petersburg Housing Authority owns the land at Hartford Street North and 32nd Avenue North, where it is working with Blue Sky Communities and Place Architecture to develop The Hartford Apartments.
The new community will provide housing for families near the 34th Street corridor, with construction planned on property the authority already controls.

Just a few blocks away, the housing authority also plans to renovate Saratoga Apartments at 3475 32nd Avenue North, an existing affordable housing community with 34 one- and two-bedroom units spread across two two-story buildings.
Both properties are covered by the same funding award, which will support new construction at Hartford and improvements to the existing apartments at Saratoga.
The $7.4 million award comes from a larger $40.85 million affordable housing package that St. Petersburg City Council approved unanimously on Oct. 1, covering six projects across the city.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery program provides the funding.
The housing authority, which serves more than 4,000 low-income households in St. Petersburg, has not announced a construction schedule or total development cost for the project.
