The Hernando County Board of County Commissioners approved Habitat for Humanity Tampa Bay Gulfside’s plan to build about 30 affordable homes on a 9.5-acre lot at Miracle Drive and Century Drive, in Spring Hill.
The county is donating the land to Habitat as part of its effort to expand homeownership opportunities for low- and moderate-income families.
“We are grateful to the Hernando County Board of County Commissioners for their support of our mission to bring affordable homeownership to hardworking individuals and families,” said Mike Sutton, president and chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity Tampa Bay Gulfside.
Habitat expanded into Hernando County in April 2024, after being awarded the territory by Habitat for Humanity International. Previously known as Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas and West Pasco Counties, the organization rebranded to reflect its broader service area. Habitat broke ground on its first Hernando County home last month.
Habitat homeowners must complete the nonprofit’s homeownership program, which includes financial education and 350 to 450 hours of sweat equity. The homes will be sold for an average price of $250,000, with mortgage payments, taxes and insurance averaging about $1,200 per month—well below the area’s market rent of $1,700 to $2,700.
The Spring Hill project is expected to be completed within 30 months.
