MOSI launches digital dome theatre with live astronomy shows and 360-degree films (PHOTOS)

The second-largest planetarium in the United States is now open at Tampa’s Museum of Science & Industry. Daily space and science shows are now included in general admission.

MOSI’s new Digital Dome Theatre—an 82-foot-wide, 330-seat venue—replaces the museum’s previous 46-seat planetarium, featuring a 10,000-square-foot NanoSeam screen and an 8K projection system. Each show begins with a live night sky tour led by a MOSI astronomer, followed by a 30-minute, 360-degree science film. Additional shows are $5 each.

The first student field trip welcomed children from three Hillsborough County elementary schools. The theatre hosted a screening of the documentary Space for Art, highlighting Stott’s post-NASA work blending science and creativity.

The theatre’s system includes 10 Christie projectors, a Digistar 7 control platform and Bowen speakers. Construction on the dome’s NanoSeam screen began in the fall of 2024 and took 13 weeks to complete.

MOSI is located at 4801 E. Fowler Ave. in Tampa’s Uptown District.
