SOF Week becomes launchpad for defense AI deals

Defense AI investment activity during SOF Week reflects Tampa’s growing role as a hub for special operations, military technology and next-generation battlefield systems.

Federal IT contractor B&A announced Tuesday that it made a strategic investment in Washington, D.C.-based startup Bad Monkey AI during SOF Week in Tampa.

Financial terms of the investment were not disclosed.

Bad Monkey AI develops battlefield artificial intelligence systems intended to help military operators process combat, telemetry and sensor data faster in contested environments.

The partnership combines B&A’s classified systems integration experience with Bad Monkey AI’s Intelligent Event Processor platform, which processes battlefield and sensor data in real time across disconnected, degraded and low-bandwidth environments.

The companies said the technology is designed to reduce dependence on centralized computing infrastructure while helping military operators identify threats and respond more quickly in communications-constrained combat zones.

“Bad Monkey AI has tackled a problem the defense community has wrestled with for years: how to make sense of overwhelming data volumes at the speed the mission demands,” Jonathan Evans, president and CEO of B&A, said in a statement.

The companies framed the investment around what defense technology firms increasingly describe as “machine-speed decision advantage,” a growing Pentagon priority as military leaders push for faster integration between intelligence systems, battlefield sensors and operational decision-making.

Carlton Reeves, founder and CEO of Bad Monkey AI, said modern warfare increasingly depends on the ability to process and act on battlefield data in real time, particularly in environments where communications infrastructure is limited or unreliable.

Carl Muller, B&A’s chief AI officer, said the platform enables real-time data fusion in disconnected environments where traditional AI architectures often struggle to function effectively.

SOF Week, held annually in Tampa, has become one of the defense industry’s largest showcases for emerging military technologies, drawing Special Operations leaders, defense contractors, acquisition officials and venture-backed startups focused on artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, cybersecurity and battlefield communications.

Bad Monkey AI is exhibiting in Accelerator Alley at the Marriott Water Street and will participate in the conference’s startup pitch competition Thursday.
