Salcines Park reopened April 28 after a $1.4 million renovation funded by the Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency, restoring a 6,000-square-foot public space in West Tampa.
City officials held a ribbon-cutting for the park, which is named for civic leader Emiliano Salcines and was once viewed as a gateway into the neighborhood. The reopening comes one week after the city unveiled upgrades at Herman Massey Park downtown, another CRA-funded project.

The project reshaped the park’s layout and added new infrastructure intended to support daily use. Crews installed shaded pergolas over seating areas, café-style tables and benches, interactive game tables, new lighting, landscaping and updated paving. The city also replaced fencing to align with the surrounding historic district. Together, those changes aim to increase visibility, improve safety and create a space that supports both casual use and small gatherings.
“Salcines Park, an important part of our history, has been beautifully renovated and is now ready for present and future generations to enjoy,” CRA Board Chairman Luis Viera said during the event.
The project was funded through tax increment financing, which requires property tax growth within a CRA district to be reinvested in the same area.

West Tampa continues to see new development activity moving west from downtown and the riverfront. In that context, public spaces often serve as anchors for surrounding residential and commercial growth, while also providing shared space for existing residents.
At Salcines Park, the redesign keeps visual ties to the area’s history. The site sits against a blue-and-white mural that honors local figures, and the updated layout frames that backdrop as a central feature rather than a secondary element.
City officials have not outlined the next round of CRA park projects, but the recent reopenings at Salcines and Herman Massey parks point to continued investment in public spaces within redevelopment districts.
