Midtown Tampa is getting a new 339-unit apartment tower, with the 23-story Midtown South Tower planned for Himes Avenue and Cypress Street.
Confirmed to TBBW after a foundation filing Monday, the roughly 423,000-square-foot tower will add another residential building to the 22-acre district, alongside apartments, hotels, stores, restaurants and roughly 650,000 square feet of office space.
More than two dozen individual properties were stitched together over decades to create those 22 contiguous acres, enough land to build Midtown’s different pieces together rather than one project at a time. At the height of the first construction wave, five crawler cranes were working above 10 buildings at once.
On 1.77 acres near Himes and Cypress, most of the South Tower site is still a surface parking lot, with a 2,300-square-foot office building that will come down to make room for the 247-foot tower.
Parking will take up the first six floors, with the 339 apartments beginning on the seventh. The building opens up there, too, onto a pool and outdoor deck, fitness facilities, saunas, spa areas, grilling space and a clubroom, while another clubroom and outdoor space are planned 16 floors higher at the top of the tower.
Down near Cypress Street, residents will enter through a lobby alongside the mailroom and coworking space, which continues onto the second floor.
Long before any of those 23 stories rise above Midtown, engineers expect to send 18-inch auger-cast piles roughly 50 to 60 feet below ground, extending at least 10 feet into the limestone that will support the tower.
