Moving women’s health care forward at AdventHealth

At AdventHealth, we understand that women have unique health needs throughout each phase and stage of their life that require specialized, customized care that’s as individual as they are – from mammograms and pelvic health to maternity care and menopause.

We’re evolving as well by staying on the forefront of women’s health with new innovations and technologies that enable us to deliver the highest quality of care and better health outcomes.

Advanced mammography for better breast cancer detection

AdventHealth offers advanced mammography options from 3D mammograms to contrast-enhanced mammograms. We were also the first in Tampa Bay to offer molecular breast imaging, which highlights differences in breast tissue to help pinpoint breast cancer earlier and start treatment sooner.

Within our network of care, we also offer the innovative Pristina Dueta™, a hand-held remote control that allows patients to play an active role in determining their level of breast compression during mammograms, and the SCOUT® Wire-Free Radar Breast Localization System, which allows surgeons to better pinpoint cancerous tissue in a lumpectomy or biopsy, increasing the probability of complete cancer removal and reducing the likelihood of additional surgeries. The additional benefit to the patient is that SCOUT does not use a wire. Before SCOUT, the most common way to identify breast tumors was by using a “guided wire” where a radiologist would place a thin, hooked wire through the skin to the tumor location and then use the wire to locate the tumor for removal. This procedure would happen on the day of the surgery, but there could be hours between the time the wire was placed and surgery, adding worry and discomfort to the patient. The new SCOUT technology enables the surgeon to pinpoint more accurately without a wire.

Robotic surgery for shorter recovery times

AdventHealth uses robotic-assisted surgery for a range of women’s health procedures, including gynecology and urology. Working through very small incisions, the surgeon is in control from start to finish guiding the robot throughout the entire procedure. The da Vinci® Xi surgical system offers greater precision and a broader range of movement during minimally invasive surgery, which often means less blood loss and a lower risk of infection, along with minimal scarring and faster recovery time – getting back to life quicker with less downtime and less pain.

Minimally invasive treatments for very common conditions

One out of every three women in the U.S. experiences symptoms from pelvic floor disorders, including urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, painful intercourse, and painful menstrual periods. At AdventHealth, our highly skilled surgeons are leaders and teachers in the field of urogynecology and are experts in surgical advancements. Our surgeons utilize minimally invasive surgical techniques including vaginal, laparoscopic and robotic options for a quicker and faster recovery.

Another common condition affecting many women is uterine fibroids, which were previously treated through a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) or myomectomy (surgical removal of uterine fibroids).  With the Acessa® procedure, a physician uses a laparoscopic ultrasound probe and radiofrequency ablation to destroy fibroid tissue, which means symptom relief without having to surgically cut open or perform a hysterectomy.

Research to improve the treatment of heart disease

AdventHealth Tampa is currently conducting national research on female heart disease with The WARRIOR Trial. The study focuses on women who have chest pain or other symptoms of heart disease, but no significant blockage. Research has found that women who present this way are often released from cardiology care untreated but have very high rates of stroke, heart failure and death. Doctors say what they learn could ultimately provide guidelines for treatment of women without obstructive coronary disease and save many lives.
