Hillsborough breaks ground on $1.2B wastewater project

Hillsborough County is advancing a $1.2 billion wastewater conveyance and treatment project in Lithia, part of a broader effort to expand system capacity as growth continues in South Hillsborough.

The One Water South project includes a new advanced wastewater treatment plant, a high-capacity pump station and a network of pipelines to move wastewater and reclaimed water across the system.

County officials say the facility is expected to meet regional demand through at least 2050. The Balm Road Super Lift Station will be able to move up to 56 million gallons of wastewater per day to the new plant.

The system will serve Apollo Beach, Brandon, Gibsonton, Riverview, Ruskin, Wimauma, Sun City and Valrico, areas that have seen continued residential and commercial growth.

The project is part of the county’s One Water Program, a larger capital initiative that integrates drinking water, wastewater and reclaimed water systems. The program is intended to support long-term infrastructure needs tied to population growth and environmental management.
