Tampa Theater restoration, new micro-screening room now complete

The historic Tampa Theater now has a new micro-screening room offering patrons an intimate setting for viewing, for up to 43 people.

The $2.9 million project, overseen by Creative Contractors and completed this month, includes restoration to the theater’s 1,260 square-foot lobby and auditorium area and the screening room, which also includes two wheelchair accessible locations.

“We are deeply honored and inspired to be part of this very special addition to the Tampa Theatre. The Theatre is a local treasure and a significant part of our region’s cultural heritage. We are very proud to have played a small role in enhancing its future,” Creative Contractors provided in a written statement.

The Tampa Theater was built in 1926 and is a protected landmark as one of the nation’s best-preserved historic theaters. Construction on the micro-theater began last July. Its design uses colors, textures and details from original architect John Eberson’s plans for the original construction of the theater. Architects on the new design, Ybor City-based Kreher Barna Design Studio, added modern touches while paying tribute to Eberson’s career and family collection of art and photos.

Creative Contractors previously completed work on the Tampa Theater’s main theater and lobby and has worked on the Bryan Glazer Family Jewish Community Center in Tampa, the Capitol Theater in Clearwater and St. Petersburg High School in St. Pete.

The company has been in business for 50 years and is one of the largest locally owned contractors in the region. It specializes in construction of hospitals, schools, cultural facilities, municipal buildings and wellness and recreation spaces.
