If you have not visited The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts yet, head to Ybor City soon – its new location since September 2023. The Museum is on Seventh Avenue, in the historic Kress Building, an artistic hub.
Founded in 2001, FMoPA is dedicated to preserving and exhibiting photographic art by national and international artists and with a mission to enrich the community by operating outreach programs to educate children and adults.
“The museum’s goal is to educate our community, and beyond, about the importance of photography as a central art medium. While we loved our previous building, it was on the second floor and not very accessible to visitors. Here, in Ybor, we are on the first floor, right on Seventh Ave, making it more visible to those who are walking around. We are also in the Kress Building, which houses over 15 different artist studios. It is a perfect fit for us to be within the ever-growing artistic community in Ybor,” says Sara Canon, the exhibitions manager for FMoPA.
The facility has already exhibited famous national and international photographers in its new location, including photographers such as Ansel Adams, Dorthea Lange and Edward Weston.
Currently, FMoPA’s 22nd Annual Members’ Show is running until January 14, 2024. It features 103 photographs, from 73 FMoPA members, in five distinct categories, ranging from portraits to abstract to AI-enhanced photography. This is the biggest Members’ Show yet. The award ceremony for the event will be January 11, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
“Photography revolves around us and has become a central part of society. Anyone who has an interest can learn something new and even develop a passion for this artistic medium. Our exhibitions are constantly changing to ensure there is always something new to see. We are also working on implementing workshops and classes for those who want to learn more about photography,” Canon says.
You can visit the exhibition, in person, and vote for your favorite piece to win this year’s People’s Choice Award. To attend the exhibit, RSVP here.
FMoPA is located at 1630 E. 7th Avenue, Tampa.
