YMCA of the Suncoast president announces retirement after 44 years of service

G. Scott Goyer, president and chief executive officer of the YMCA of the Suncoast, has announced his retirement, set for November 27, after a 44-year career with the YMCA movement, including 24 years at the YMCA of the Suncoast.

During his tenure, Goyer led the organization through significant growth and community development, expanding its programs and services and solidifying its place as a critical community resource. Under his leadership, the YMCA of the Suncoast saw the opening of three new facilities—the Greater Ridgecrest Branch, the Greater Palm Harbor Branch and the Citrus Memorial Health Foundation Branch—and expanded services into Levy County. The organization’s before- and after-school care programming also grew to 56 locations.

Membership nearly tripled during Goyer’s leadership, increasing from 45,000 individuals in 2000 to 122,000 in 2024. Additionally, his financial stewardship helped the YMCA of the Suncoast retire its capital debt in 2022, grow its endowment by $7 million and increase annual giving by $1 million.

In a statement, Goyer expressed gratitude for his time at the YMCA: “It has been an honor to serve the Suncoast community, alongside our dedicated volunteers and staff. I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together, and I am confident that the YMCA will continue to thrive in the years to come.”

The YMCA of the Suncoast Board of Directors, in partnership with the YMCA of the USA National Resource Office and the Florida State Alliance of YMCAs, is conducting a nationwide search for Goyer’s successor.
